DIY Furniture Plans – A Beautiful Piece for a Home Office

This piece is inspired by a file cabinet in the Ballard Designs catalog and is an incredibly easy build. The DIY furniture plans to build a Parsons two-drawer file cabinet features two drawers and is simply broad enough to easily suit hanging folders. The drawer fronts take an angled top and sides and so that no drawer hardware is necessary, though information technology can be installed if desired. Materials:

• 1-1/4″ pocket pigsty screws (<– affiliate link!)
• 1-1/2″ brad nails
• Border banding (<– affiliate link!)
• eighteen″ drawer slides (<– affiliate link!)
• 2″ casters
• Wood glue
• Sandpaper (100, 120 & 220 grit)
• Finishing Supplies (paint or stain & sealer)
• 2 – one/8″ x 1/two″ x 36″ strips of aluminum
• Four i/4″ nylon spacers
• Four 1″ screws to mount the aluminum

Lumber:

• 1 – 1×2 (or cut a 1-ane/ii″ strip of 3/4″ plywood) at ii′
• two – 1×x at viii′
• one – 2′ x four′ sheet of ane/iv″ plywood
• 1 – four′ x eight′ canvas of 3/4″ plywood

Cut List:

• 2 – 3/four″ plywood at xix″ ten 25-ane/4″ – Sides
• 1 – 3/four″ plywood at xv-1/2″ x nineteen″ – Lesser
• 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 17″ 10 nineteen″ – Meridian
• 1 – three/4″ plywood at 15-1/two″ x 24-one/2″ – Back
• 1 – one×2 (or 3/four″ plywood at 1-one/2″ broad) 15-1/ii″ – Stretcher
• iv – 1×10 at 13″ – Drawer Box Front end & Back
• iv – 1×ten at 18″ – Drawer Box Sides
• 2 – 1×iv″ plywood at thirteen-1/2″ x 17″ – Drawer Box Bottom
• 2 – 3/4″ plywood at 12-15/sixteen″ x 17″ – Drawer Fronts

Notes nigh the project:

Border banding will be applied to the exposed edges of the plywood prior to assembly. The bars for the hanging file folders are installed using ane/2″ aluminum strips, nylon spacers and panhead screws (run into this post).

Step One

Cutting the pieces for the sides and the lesser. With the pocket hole jig set for iii/4″ material, drill pocket holes forth the side edges of the bottom. Secure the bottom to the sides using gum and 1-1/four″ pocket hole screws.

Stride Ii

Cut the piece for the dorsum and drill pocket holes in all four edges. Secure the dorsum to the sides and bottom using glue and i-1/four″ pocket hole screws.

Pace 3

Cut the piece for the top. Secure the top to the sides using gum and one-ane/ii″ brad nails, then secure to the dorsum using mucilage and 1-one/4″ pocket hole screws.

Step Four

Cutting the piece for the stretcher and drill pocket holes in each end. Secure the divider to the cabinet sides as shown, using mucilage and 1-i/4″ pocket hole screws.

Step V

Cut the pieces for the drawer boxes. Using a router and a one/4″ straight bit, cut a 3/8″ deep groove located ane/four″ up from the bottom of each piece (this is so the drawer box bottoms can slide into place). Drill pocket holes in the sides of the shorter pieces on the opposite face up of the groove. Secure the longer sides to i of the shorter pieces using glue and i-1/4″ pocket pigsty screws.

Step Six

Cut the piece for the lesser. Slide information technology into the groove, then adhere the remaining shorter piece using glue and 1-1/four″ pocket pigsty screws.

Install the drawer slides according to the manufacturer'due south instructions.

Footstep Seven

Cut the pieces for the drawer fronts. Cutting a 45° bevel along the side edges as well equally the top border. These will face in and permit for easy opening of the drawers and so that drawer pulls will not have to exist used (they are optional!)

Position the drawer fronts on the drawer boxes installed in the chiffonier. Secure in identify using a few brad nails, and then open the drawers and secure the fronts from the inside using i-one/4″ screws.

To adhere the aluminum strips for the file folders, cut the strips into iv 13″ long pieces. Pre-drill a hole in each stop of the strip and attach the strips with the 1″ pan head screws each through a spacer into the larger drawer boxes.
